Franchise Opportunity Goa India

The Bata Shoe Company was founded by Thomas Bata in 1894. Incorporated in India in 1931, the Bata Shoe Company is India’s largest manufacturer and retailer of footwear. Bata Shoe gets its name from the small town where it was founded, the township of Batanagar just outside of Calcutta. The company is ISO certified and its stock is publicly traded. Bata stores are nationwide and retail locations can be found throughout India.

The company is looking to expand nationwide in areas from New Delhi in the north, to Assam in the east, and Goa India in the west. The company estimates a 45% percentage return on investment and a 2 to three-year payback on invested capital. There are no performance or financial guarantees and no territorial exclusivity rights.

The president of Bata’s South Asian emerging markets, Rajeev Gopalakrishnan, is quoted on the website www.franchiseindia.com as stating that the company is looking to expand its operations using the franchise model in smaller India markets. Gopalakrishnan said that the company sees smaller markets growing faster than larger urban markets due to “increasing disposable incomes and the fact that these markets are largely unrepresented by organized players, it was decided to enter new markets through franchising instead of opening own stores. Most important point in managing the franchisee business is to ensure the partners grow consistently with the brand and get a decent return on their investment.”

Currently, Bata consists of 64 franchise stores and 1300 company-owned retail stores, 5 manufacturing plants and over 7500 employees. The company sells over 50 million pairs of shoes each year. A franchise unit cost approximately 30 lac – Rs. 50 lac and a location requires at least 1000 square feet of space.

If you are looking for a “ground floor”, pardon the pun, franchise opportunity in Goa India, or any of Tier II and III markets in India, the footwear business may be an ideal way to get a foot in the door. Not only does everyone need shoes, but India, with its enormous population, provides more feet than anywhere in the world, with the exception of China. In addition, with a more affluent population emerging on the continent, the Western ways of owning many pairs of shoes could send demand through the roof. There are many footwear franchise opportunities to explore in India and we do not recommend any one over the other.
